This is among my favorite "natural" dishwasher detergents. I've used it in three different dishwashers and it's worked well in both, cleaning most of my dishes quite well (and I don't pre-rinse unless something is really bad). I've also tried the citrus-scented version of this, which works equally well (the scent in that appears to be just orange peel oil, which I can barely smell and can't at all after washing--unlike the heavily-scented "conventional" detergents with synthetic fragrances). I have previously used Seventh Generation's powdered unscented dish detergent but got the citrus one on sale on Amazon a while back. I was so impressed that I kept using it and switched to this one when the citrus one became hard to find. The ingredient list is very similar to Seventh Generation's.
You don't need much of this detergent compared to others. The directions recommend 1 tablespoon per load (splitting it evenly between the regular and pre-wash detergent cups if you have two), or 2 tablespoons for hard water or heavy loads. I normally use a heaping tablespoon and put about 1/3 of it in the pre-wash cup, but your needs may vary depending on your water. It doesn't come with any measuring device, but I just re-purposed an old plastic measuring spoon I had for this purpose. By the way, the container is almost full to the brim, which is nice so they don't waste packing, but it also means that if your spoon has a handle it won't fit nicely into the jar until you've used a bit of the detergent--not necessarily a problem, but something you might want to consider.
All things considered, I find this a good detergent and would buy it again. Unfortunately, it's almost doubled in price since I first found it on Amazon (no longer see it in Subscribe and Save, and Prime Pantry is still more than it was before). I've switched back to the Seventh Generation powder since it's easier for me to find, and I can buy it locally. I wouldn't hesitate to switch back if the Biokleen detergent became more readily available, but both work well for me!
I fried some eggs, and then some hash browns, in the frying pan, which always leaves a bunch of burnt-on stuff to clean up. I put it into the dishwasher hours later and tried this out on it. It was COMPLETELY clean, which was a relief, because if this hadn't worked I would have gone back to my chemical-bomb cleaner to avoid that mess.
What's kind of weird and cool, though, is that when I would use the chemical-comb cleaner on the same scenario, there would be big clumps of the burnt mess in the dishwasher filter. Which is fine and all, that's what the filter is for. But this powder just disintegrates all that, and the filter is totally clean. Must be the enzymes or something.
Anyway, I'm so grateful to have this. I'd been using Biokleen's dishwashing gel before I got a dishwasher, and it worked great, so I'm glad this didn't disappoint. I don't miss the weird oily chemical residue the chemical bomb cleaner would leave, or how my dishes would smell and taste chemical-y.
One thing I've noticed: every now and then some dishes will not get clean, but it's always been because I didn't position them well for my dishwasher. I don't know if that could be the cause for other people's troubles, but my dishwasher is not a beast and if you just slightly block another dish, it won't get clean. But if I take care to position everything well, it doesn't matter how dirty they are.
So: this gets everything very clean in my mediocre portable dishwasher. Thumbs up from me.
We were having major detergent build-up problems with our 1994 dishwasher. A service person came out and explained that most of the newer detergents are designed for the newer dishwashers which use less water. He also said the newer dishwashers only last 4-8 years. Meanwhile, our standard issue Whirlpool is going strong on 19 years, which the handy man said was the way it should be. Uses a bit more water, sure, but I'll take the long-lasting quality any day. Anyway, he said the the new detergents use enzymes which need food on the plates in order to get them clean. We used Affresh, tried Cascade packs with lemi-shine. All of it worked but nothing worked as well as Bio-Kleen for our every day use! No residue at all, perfectly shiny and clean. It has no scent, which I prefer. We use our dishwasher every day I can't recommend Bio-Kleen enough, especially if you have a old dishwasher that you're not ready to part with.
We have been using this for a couple of weeks now and it is working as well as my previous detergents (Sam's Club powder and Cascade powder). Everything comes out of my Maytag washer clean and shiny. We will probably continue using this product as it is much "greener" than other products.
A year later and we are still using the BioKleen and getting ready to place another order. We haven't had any problems with it and it is still working nicely.
I like this product but always feel that the Ecover tablets do a better job of cleaning. When I use this product by itself it seems to still leave some stuck on food particles on the dishes. I did like using this product with the Ecover tablets by putting this powder in the pre-wash cup and then putting the Ecover tablet in the main washer cup and it always cleaned the dishes really well. If you want to clean with a product by itself I suggest trying the Ecover tablets first.
I don’t know what it is, maybe this doesn’t dissolve food or maybe it’s just not good detergent. I’ve never had dirtier dishes than when I used this. We actually took apart the dishwasher a couple times thinking the washer itself was broken bc every time this detergent was used, it left bits of food all over all of the dishes like a spray of tiny chunks all over. I like that it is scent free but that is the ONLY good thing about it. I do like Biokleen’s other products, though. We don’t have hard water by the way. The instructions state that you may need a rinse agent if you have hard water.
