DIY Dry Shampoo

For those “hat kinda days”!

No time for a shower? Is it a “hat kinda day”? Prone to greasy hair by evening? It doesn’t have to be this way! Whip up this DIY Dry Shampoo and take it with you wherever you go. Brush a little into your roots and you’ll be good to go (sans hat) without that unwanted shine!

This is the perfect solution while camping, travelling or those days there’s just no time for suds. Dry shampoo can help you freshen up before going out in the evening by absorbing excess oil and shine, while providing a little extra volume to boot!

DIY Dry Shampoo Recipe

DIY Dry Shampoo

Ingredients:

Optional Ingredients:

Follow measurements below based on hair color and see the info-graphic for additional ingredients and recipe options!

Details:

  • Prep Time: 5-10 mins
  • Yield: appx. 1/4-1/2 cup
  • Shelf-life: 6+ months based on storage container

Directions:

For dark hair: Use 2 tablespoons arrowroot or cornstarch and 4-5 tablespoons cocoa powder (if it’s not dark enough, you may need to use dark cocoa powder).

For light hair: Use 1/4 cup arrowroot or cornstarch and 1 teaspoon cocoa powder.

For medium hair: Begin with 1/4 cup arrowroot or cornstarch and 1 tablespoon cocoa, check color against hair and gradually add more cocoa until desired color is reached.

Because all hair colors are different, you may need to adjust the recipes slightly. Simply add more arrowroot/cornstarch to lighten, or more cocoa powder to darken until it blends with your hair color nicely.

  • Mix all ingredients into a glass jar with lid (see ratios below), stirring well with a small whisk to combine.

Additional Tips:

  • Using an old makeup brush works great. Dip brush into dry shampoo, tap off excess, and dab onto roots as needed.
  • Part your hair in various places to absorb all oil.
  • You don’t need much, a little goes a long way!
  • I’ve found using too much makes my hair static-y!
  • Allow the shampoo to sit for a minute or so to absorb any oil, then brush through your hair to distribute the shampoo evenly (or use your fingers to gently massage your scalp if your hair is curly or previously styled). Wait 2-3 minutes for shampoo to set, then style as normal.
  • Test your batch before you determine if it’s too light or dark. I find it usually looks too light when first applied. After distributing evenly (sometimes rubbing gently with fingertips) it should blend into your hair nicely.

Whipped up a batch this morning with M. He chose lemon EO. Oh goodness, it smells just like Russell Stover’s Valentine’s Day candies!

Awesome! Especially if you want to smell like candy! I do like the cocoa smell, I can always smell it when showering after I use the dry shampoo!
