Essential Oils Freshen Laundry Header
T

ell me I’m not the only one who starts a load of laundry, gets side tracked and forgets about it in the washer for a day (or three)? Anyone else seem to have this problem?

So the load gets washed again, because by now it’s musty and smells worse than it did before it was washed. Sometimes even after re-washing the smell can linger. There’s nothing worse than stepping out of the shower, grabbing a nice clean towel, then BAM! Still stinky!

A few years ago we ditched laundry detergents scented with harmful fragrances and opted for a more human-friendly brand. If I said I didn’t miss the scent of tide detergent and bounce laundry sheets I’d be a liar. But it’s not a compromise I’m willing to take with our health. So if the lack of fragrance (and my forgetfulness) results in smelly laundry, what am I to do? Cause you’d better believe I’m not going to wear smelly clothes!

Our two friends baking soda and essential oils save the day again! These two pack a mighty punch and are a powerhouse against stinky, musty laundry (it even works wonders on cloth diapers)! Next time that forgotten load sits untouched for days on end in your washer, grab some baking soda and some purifying essential oils and breathe easy, you’re only a couple hours away from fresh laundry!

Laundry Freshener

1/2 cup baking soda
6-8 drops essential oils*
Normal amount of regular laundry detergent

*I use 3 drops lemongrass, 2 drops lavender and 2 drops tea tree essential oils.

To Use: This recipe is for a single load of laundry.

Step 1: In a small bowl, mix together baking soda, essential oils and laundry detergent (or just mix with your hands in the soap dispenser).

Step 2: Add to washing machine (or detergent dispenser) and wash normally with an extra rinse cycle (washing towels on hot is best).

Step 3: In about an hour, remember you started the laundry!

Step 4: Once load has finished, give it the ol’ sniff-test to see if any lingering odor remains. If so, repeat steps 1-3. We’ve found that one wash cycle usually does the trick.

Step 5: Dry as normal and enjoy your nice, clean laundry…sans horrific odorous scent!

To speed up drying time and further eliminate chemicals from your laundry routine, I highly recommend these dryer balls! We’ve had ours for almost two years and they still work as well as the first day I bought them. For more information on dryer balls, read this post!

I have actually been doing this for every load all week! We’ve been swapping out winter clothes for summer clothes, so I figure it’s a great way to freshen them up before storing away, and freshening those that have been in storage too! It smells heavenly when transferring the wet clothes to the dryer!
