wapping out your toothpaste for a healthier alternative can be a change that many are reluctant to make. Some just can’t get past the taste or texture, while others miss the bubbles and foam. But even from those who don’t love the new toothpaste, they never fail to say how clean their teeth feel. Sometimes, the benefits will win out in the end.

If you’re reluctant to try homemade toothpaste, (or you tried and didn’t care for it) my encouragement to you is stick with it. Your teeth, gums and oral hygiene will certainly thank you! And a clean bill of health from your dentist is likely to help motivate your commitment!

Healthy Change #26 is to ditch the conventional toothpaste and give a DIY a try! I’ve shared this clay toothpaste before, and today I’m sharing a toothpaste powder that’s both remineralizing and whitening. I’m also sharing my oral hygiene routine that noticeably whitens and cleans my teeth and gums without harmful or damaging chemicals.

To Make: Jackie, over at The Natural Homestead, has a great recipe for a kids remineralizing tooth powder. This was the base I used for my recipe, then adapted it with additional whitening and remineralizing ingredients. Feel free to scale this recipe up or down according to your family size. This recipe may also be customized for each family member and stored in individual jars for each person to “dip” their toothbrush into. This is a great travel toothpaste recipe as it’s lightweight and can fit in a small jar or zip-top baggie.

Step 1: In a non-metallic bowl (or 1 cup mason jar), add all ingredients except essential oils and gently blend together until well combined (or secure lid and shake, shake, shake).

Step 2: Add essential oils, starting with smallest amount and mix well. Because you’re mixing powders and oils you may need to squeeze the essential oil drops between your fingers to mix them with the tooth powder.

Step 3: Taste a small amount and adjust recipe as needed (ie: more xylitol or stevia, more essential oils, etc.)

To use: Wet toothbrush and dip into tooth powder. Wet brush again and brush as normal.

Oral Hygiene Routine: Remember, even incorporating some of these can benefit oral health. If you can’t do each of these daily, or even weekly, don’t throw in the towel…just do your best!

* Although we don’t consume xylitol powder (a sugar alcohol) due to the possible inflammation and gut irritation it can cause, we make an exception to this tooth powder because it has proven extremely beneficial to oral health!
